BASIS Independent Manhattan’s Integrated Curriculum in Preschool

Emphasizing connections between subjects starting in PreK & Kindergarten

April 4, 2022

At private school BASIS Independent Manhattan, students in PreK–12 engage with the integrated, comprehensive BASIS Curriculum spanning the liberal arts and STEM from day one. In PreK and Kindergarten, students develop early numeracy and literacy in core courses like math, Language & Literacy, and World Discovery. But those concepts are further fortified in unique courses called “specials”—including Engineering, Mandarin, art, and music—where students learn to apply theories and solve problems flexibly as they work through various solutions.

How does it work?

Integrated learning is synthesized across traditional subjects along with intentional exploratory opportunities that help develop a child's ability to pool their collective knowledge from various subjects and problem solve.

For example, in the Engineering block, PreK students are introduced to engineering vocabulary, drawing techniques, and creative thinking. Then, in Math Discovery, a core course, students learn measuring and weighing skills. When it comes time to build a bridge that can hold 10 pounds in Engineering, students are able to apply the skills they develop in both subjects.

This integrated approach applies to liberal arts courses as well. In Mandarin, students learn the basic sound of a word as well as the tone in which it is spoken, which helps deepen general comprehension and literacy skills. Courses like music and drama are designed to help students develop skills in storytelling, communication, teamwork, public speaking, cooperation and more.
