Kindness and Compassion during the Holidays

December 18, 2024

“You Just Don’t Have the Holiday Spirit!”

Have you ever said those words? I hope not. But chances are, many of you reading this have been on the receiving end.

For most of us, the holiday season—whether it’s Christmas, New Year’s, or another celebration—is a time of joy, laughter, and connection. But for some, it’s anything but. A tragic event or a season of loss can cast a long shadow over what is often called the most wonderful time of the year, turning it into one of the most difficult.

Grief doesn’t keep a schedule, but it seems to know exactly when to strike hardest.

If you notice someone who doesn’t seem to share in the festive spirit, be gentle with them. Their struggles may not be visible, and their quietness isn’t intentional. Compassion can make all the difference.

To those of you navigating heartache while still putting on a brave face for others: thank you. Your strength doesn’t go unnoticed. And if you need someone to simply sit with you, to share in your silence without fixing or rushing you through it—know that many of us are here for you.

For those unsure of how to approach someone who’s struggling, it’s simple: just ask. A kind word or a heartfelt “How can I support you?” can mean the world.

As we close out 2024, I hope the year brought you growth, success, or lessons that will guide you forward. Here’s to 2025: a year filled with compassion, kindness, love, hope, and peace for everyone.

You are not alone.
